Baystone filly makes seven figures

First southern hemisphere breeze-up to sell for $1 million

Baystone Farm made history at the 2024 Inglis Ready2Race Sale when consigning the first horse ever to make seven figures at a Southern Hemisphere 2YO auction.

Offered as Lot 166, a daughter of Written Tycoon produced by Soriano realised $1 million when secured by Yulong Farm.

The filly had been a $200,000 purchase from Yulong Farm at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year and had blossomed into an outstanding individual. She also breezed particularly well, stopping the clock at 10.5s during the Wangaratta morning of breeze-ups.

Speaking on behalf of Yulong, general manager Vin Cox stated: “We’ve got absolute faith in our product and this is a gorgeous filly. They bought it off us for $200,000 at Easter and turned her into a $1 million filly, so a huge congratulations to the Baystone team.”

Cox continued: “She breezed up well, the team around her were talking a big game with her and that brought a big price tag, but we’re thrilled to get her back.

“The boss [Mr Zhang] was very keen on her. I’ve been in Europe with him recently and this was the horse in the sale that he kept asking about, so I think it’s fair to say he’s had his eyes on her for many weeks.’’

The precocious filly almost made it to the Flemington jump-outs in September even before her Wangaratta breeze-up, and her untapped ability had become quite apparent.  As Baystone principal Dean Harvey put it, “we knew how good she was talent wise, but it has just all come together — Written Tycoon has had an amazing few months and she’s just a queen of a filly…”

Dean added: “She’s been perfect the whole way through… I knew there’d be a lot of competition and you always hope that two heavy-hitters want her and go head-to head, and that’s what happened.”

“You’ve got to savour moments like this. This result gives you confidence that you can bring a filly like that to a sale like this and get well paid for it.’’.
